This is a Safe Place

We are grateful to be guests on Treaty 6 territory, a meeting ground, gathering place, and traveling route for many Indigenous peoples including the Plains Cree, Woodland Cree, Beaver Cree, and Dene, as well as Métis Region 4. These Indigenous people were deceived into giving up their land, and how treaty promises are still not being honoured. If we are to make progress as a society the core experiences of indigenous people, especially those who are female identifying or two spirit must be centralized to the anti-violence issue. Sexual violence is an issue that has colonial foundations, a fact that may bring forward some uncomfortable truths. Sexual violence embodies the worst parts of colonialism, a disregard for boundaries, sovereignty, or humanity. The knowledge and wisdom of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples have shaped these lands for centuries and we express gratitude to those who came before and on whose territory we live.

As we as settlers who benefitted from the unethical agreements and continue to occupy stolen land, land acknowledgements are the bare minimum we can do in acknowledging the impacts of colonialism. We recognize that we are all Treaty people and have a responsibility to become aware of our shared history, understand the Spirit and Intent of the Treaties and by doing so that we can honour the past, be aware of the present, and create a just and caring future built upon Peace, Friendship, and Understanding.
