It takes an incredible team of individuals to do the work we do.

Meet Kelsey, one of Dragonfly Centre’s Outreach Counsellors. She shares with us what she enjoys most about working with our team, and much more!
What inspired you to become a counsellor?

I have always enjoyed connecting with people on a meaningful level. I selected educational psychology as my minor when I completed my undergrad and the psychology courses were always my favourite. Although I waited over a decade to take my master’s in counselling psychology, my passion for psychology grew during those years through reading and listening to podcasts.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

I think it is an honour to be able to be a part of my clients healing and growth journeys. My job provides me with continued opportunities to dive deep into what matters the most to people.

What do you enjoy most about working at the Dragonfly Centre?

I have been at the Dragonfly Centre since I started my practicum while completing my master’s and what I have enjoyed the most is that I have always felt supported as a counsellor by my supervisor and colleagues. As a practicum student, I experienced a lot of ‘firsts’ as a counsellor here, and the supportive and collaborative nature of the centre helped me navigate these learning opportunities with ease.

What does the typical “day in the life” of your role look like?

My day starts with helping my three daughters get ready for school in the morning. Once I arrive at the school, I am seeing students consistently throughout the day. When I have time in-between sessions, I am writing case notes and planning for the best ways to support every client I am working with.

What advice would you give to someone who is struggling?

Firstly, I would want them to know that seeking help is a sign of strength. I would also want them to know that healing is not linear and looks different for every person. It is a lifelong process, and everyone deserves love and good things in life along the way.
